Logs & Corners

The heart and soul of every log home is the logs. Premier Log Homes & Structures uses only the finest raw materials in order to produce the highest quality logs in the log home industry. Our quality assurance program starts by ensuring only heart logs are used; this ensures that your logs are made of the finest, most structurally sound portion of the raw timber. Then our logs are kiln dried (excluding Cypress & Western Red Cedar) to average moisture content of less than 19%, ensuring that the logs are:
  • Pre-Shrunk - So the log's equilibrium point is at or very close to the average moisture content of the air surrounding them. This minimizes shrinking or "settling," and eliminates the need for elaborate settling systems such as springs or through-bolts which increase the opportunity for costly issues that can arise months after your home is constructed.
  • Sap Crystallization - Kiln Drying also crystallizes the sap that may occur in the logs naturally. This helps eliminates the sticky sap that can ooze from "air-dried" logs.
  • Pest Sanitization - The heat from Kiln Drying will eliminate existing mold, mildew, fungus, insect and insect larva that may be living in non Kiln Dried Timber.
  • Minimized Checking - Checking or cracking in a log is part of its drying process and although most logs have some checking the severity of that checking isn't realized until the timber has reached its equilibrium point with the moisture content in the air. With air-dried logs, it can take up to two years to reach this point. This means that you will not know the severity of checking in the log until well after the home is constructed. Although heart logs ensure the checking will not go all the way through the core of the log, there may still be structural issues that arise from excessive checking. Since checking is part of the drying process, Kiln Drying allows us to pre-dry our logs, therefore letting us know if there is any checking and if so to what extent so we can eliminate any checks that might be or may become a structural issue. This ensures that each of our logs arrive on your site Timber Product Inspection Council stamped, certified and graded for structural integrity, giving you peace of mind in knowing that you won't be getting any unwanted issues months or years after your home is constructed.

Once the timbers are Kiln Dried, they are processed into the profile or shape of your choice. Then each and every log is Hand-Sanded to ensure that they will accept the borate treatment, stain and sealant. This can save you thousands over having to site-sand the logs after the house is erected and prior to treating.
